Cracked Heels are a common foot problem. This is where the skin on the heels become dry and cracked. If they are left too long, callous can build up to a point where the cracks can extend into fissures. These are deep cracks that can bleed and can be very painful to walk on. This problem is common in the summer months when the weather is drier and people tend to wear open-backed shoes (ie: sandals and jandals). Your podiatrist can treat this problem by removing the callous and advising you on the use of specific emollients and footwear that will aid in prevention. If you are having problems with painful cracked heels, book an appointment to have them assessed and treated.
