Diabetes

Diabetes is an epidemic in New Zealand and every diabetic needs to have a podiatrist on their team of health professionals.  Diabetes affects the body in many ways and one of those is the effects it can have on the lower limbs and feet.

Diabetes, if not managed well, can damage both nerves and blood vessels that carry blood and nerve impulses to and away from the lower limbs and feet.  If this happens, the diabetic is left with a diminished blood supply and unable to feel what is under their feet (due to nerve damage).  This can lead to secondary complications such as ulcers, gangrene and potential amputation.

A podiatrist plays an important role in assisting diabetics in avoiding any secondary complications by running regular tests on the nerves and blood supply in the feet.  This regular testing can allow any problems to be picked up early.  If you already have these complications, we can use orthotics, footwear advice and padding to reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

Diabetes is a manageable disease as long as you stay informed and keep up regular visits to your doctor, diabetic nurse, eye specialist and podiatrist.
