Mortons Neuroma

A Morton's Neuroma occurs in the forefoot (ball of the foot).  It causes pain, tingling and numbness in this area.

There are nerves that run between the metatarsals of the foot and when these nerves get compressed by the metatarsals, you will feel pain, tingling, burning and/or numbness.  It commonly occurs with the nerve that runs between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals.

Anything that causes compression or irritation of the nerve can lead to the development of a neuroma.  One of the most common offenders is wearing shoes that have a tapered toebox or high-heeled shoes that require the toes to be forced into the toebox.  Another cause is over-pronation (feet that roll in too much/low arches).

Your podiatrist will determine the cause of the pressure and treat the problem accordingly.  Common forms of treatment are footwear assessment and advice, orthotic therapy, padding to offload the area, or in severe cases surgery may be recommended.
