One of the most common ailments that can occur is the thickening of your toenails. A thickened toenail can be an unsightly condition that, in many cases, occurs out of nowhere. There are many reasons as to why this may have happened such as footwear that is to small, different skin conditions, fungal infections and/or injury. When a nail is injured to the point where it falls off, there can be damaged caused to the nail bed (where the nail grows from). This can cause the new nail to grow back deformed and/or thickened. Other issues such as fungal infections attack the nail and can also cause the nail to become thickened. This can be a problem when you find that you can no longer cut your nails yourself. Whatever the cause behind your toenails becoming thickened, your podiatrist can help to maintain the thickness and length of these nails. If you are having difficulty with thick nails, book an appointment to have them assessed and treated.
